For the first time, Christians are in the minority in England and Wales
In 2021, 27.5 million people, or 46.2% of the population, identified as "Christian," according to data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS). In comparison to 59.3% (33.3 million people) in 2011, this is a decline of 13.1 percentage points. Except for Christianity, every major religion saw growth throughout the ten years. The Muslim population increased from 4.9 percent to 6.5 percent during the same period (2.7 to 3.9 million). The number of Sikhs increased from 423,000 to 524,000, or 0.8% to 0.9%, and the number of Buddhists increased to 0.4%.
